Perimenopausal and menopausal women suffering from low oxytocin who also have these gene variations may experience a more exaggerated desire for chocolate to mitigate their symptoms.</p>\n\n<p>As a perimenopausal women living in Switzerland, I have also had to learn how to turn my chocolate craving into something that is healthful and satisfying. \nMy favorite option is to combine 85% dark chocolate with cocoa nibs to extend the flavor. Its effect on improvement in blood circulation can also\nlead to an improvement in sex drive which often decreases for women\nduring perimenopause. High cocoa dark chocolate flavanols may slow down\nthe visual skin aging women start experiencing during this time. This\nis because cocoa intake has been shown to protect the skin from the\nharmful effects of sunlight, while improving blood flow to the skin and\nincreasing skin hydration and density [<a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30663066/\">3</a>].</p>\n\n<p>Did you know chocolate increases estrogen in the body? Estrogenic foods, such as soy and chocolate, can be helpful to reduce low estrogen related symptoms, such as irregular menstrual cycles, mood swings and hot flashes. High cocoa dark chocolate also makes us feel good by triggering the release of endorphins, serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin that are considered the “feel good” neurotransmitters. In women suffering from low neurotransmitter production which can occur in the setting of low estrogen, chocolate may help mitigate this situation.</p>\n\n<p>Variations in the gene for oxytocin have been associated with higher food intake and waist circumference [<a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34091593/\">4</a>]. Perimenopausal and menopausal women suffering from low oxytocin who also have these gene variations may experience a more exaggerated desire for chocolate to mitigate their symptoms.</p>\n\n<p>As a perimenopausal women living in Switzerland, I have also had to learn how to turn my chocolate craving into something that is healthful and satisfying. \nMy favorite option is to combine 85% dark chocolate with cocoa nibs to extend the flavor. High cocoa dark chocolate flavanols may slow down\nthe visual skin aging women start experiencing during this time. This\nis because cocoa intake has been shown to protect the skin from the\nharmful effects of sunlight, while improving blood flow to the skin and\nincreasing skin hydration and density [<a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30663066/\">3</a>].</p>\n\n<p>Did you know chocolate increases estrogen in the body? Estrogenic foods, such as soy and chocolate, can be helpful to reduce low estrogen related symptoms, such as irregular menstrual cycles, mood swings and hot flashes. High cocoa dark chocolate also makes us feel good by triggering the release of endorphins, serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin that are considered the “feel good” neurotransmitters. In women suffering from low neurotransmitter production which can occur in the setting of low estrogen, chocolate may help mitigate this situation.</p>\n\n<p>Variations in the gene for oxytocin have been associated with higher food intake and waist circumference [<a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34091593/\">4</a>]. Perimenopausal and menopausal women suffering from low oxytocin who also have these gene variations may experience a more exaggerated desire for chocolate to mitigate their symptoms.</p>\n\n<p>As a perimenopausal women living in Switzerland, I have also had to learn how to turn my chocolate craving into something that is healthful and satisfying. \nMy favorite option is to combine 85% dark chocolate with cocoa nibs to extend the flavor. Let’s start with some perspective.</p>\n\n<p>Western medicine practice is focused on diagnosing disease from symptoms,\nblood tests, physical exam, radiography, etc. This is important for\nvery sick patients to understand their best treatments. However,\nthese treatments are focused on the end of their health-disease\ntrajectory<!-- more -->. Individuals that experience symptoms earlier in their\nhealth trajectory are not diagnosable with disease. They may have a\nunique combination of symptoms that are uncomfortable and affect their\nquality of life. They actively seek out medical care but often find few\neffective answers. These symptoms reflect cellular imbalances. If they\ncan be remedied, the individual is more likely to return to a high state\nof health and wellness and create a nutrition and lifestyle therapy that\nreduces their risk of disease.</p>\n\n<p>Women with symptoms related to hormonal health imbalances are in need of health optimization. Individuals that experience symptoms earlier in their\nhealth trajectory are not diagnosable with disease. They may have a\nunique combination of symptoms that are uncomfortable and affect their\nquality of life. They actively seek out medical care but often find few\neffective answers. These symptoms reflect cellular imbalances. If they\ncan be remedied, the individual is more likely to return to a high state\nof health and wellness and create a nutrition and lifestyle therapy that\nreduces their risk of disease.</p>\n\n<p>Women with symptoms related to hormonal health imbalances are in need of health optimization. Their symptoms reflect the physiologic stress of changing hormones and they are a warning she needs to re-balance her nutrition and lifestyle. The transiiton of perimenopause to menopause is a 10 year time frame, on average, that is characterized by hormone changes and imbalances. Seventy percent of women in this stage of life experience life disrupting symptoms, such as heavy and eratic periods, hot flashes, sleep disturbances and anxiety.
